Estremo Occidente 9 composizioni per pianoforte – nove esagrammi de “I Ching” is a disc dedicated to the timeless beauty of the piano sound. The recordings collect nine compositions for piano by Vittorio Nocenzi, inspired by nine hexagrams taken from I Ching, the work of a contemporary composer who during his artistic life, has combined the classical training with a rock path of great creativity. It be I Ching something particularly esoteric and seemingly random, even the recordings have sought the same incidentality by resorting to only three “take” of sound for each song, according to a criterion of “instant composition”; while for Wu Wuang – L’inaspettato, one “take”.
A final brief consideration concerns the expansion of the piano harmonics through the use of a pedal, which is kept down to a much larger extent than is recommended by piano etiquette: the aim is to allow a different listening, as if the listener could put his ear in the piano’s tail to hear the harmonics of the strings, expressing the maximum of their tonal richness.
